How it affects your visa
Each education provider gets an allocation of new international students. Offshore Student visa applications for that provider are processed as high priority until it reaches 80% of its allocation. After that, applications are still accepted and decided, but they are processed more slowly.
This means the same visa can take very different times depending on which provider you choose and when you apply.
What this means for students from Pakistan and Saudi Arabia
- Apply early for 2027 intakes, before popular providers fill their priority places.
- Ask your provider how close it is to its allocation when you accept an offer.
- Prepare a complete application. Financial evidence, English results and a clear study plan (the Genuine Student requirement) still decide the outcome.
- Watch the funds rules. Australia is reviewing how students show financial capacity. Read our update on the student funds consultation.
Common questions
Is 295,000 a limit on student visas?
No. The government says it is a planning level, not a cap. It sets processing priority, not a hard stop.
Does it affect students already in Australia?
The priority system applies to Student visa applications lodged outside Australia.
Will my visa be refused if my provider is over its allocation?
No. Your application is still assessed on its merits, but it may take longer to process.
